what's in a name?

We've yet to decide on a name. We have lots of ideas and have received many suggestions. We have two books full of names and I have babynames.com bookmarked in order to check it regularly. Since we don't have an official name, people have taken to calling her different things that they like.

Claire Huxtable, Belky, Lynn Jr., Millicent, Mildred, Hilda, Penelope, Gracie, Jerusha, Delilah...

Don't worry, we do have the ones we like and dislike somewhat narrowed down. But I think we may be one of those couples that waits until we see her before giving her a name. In the meantime, we're open to your suggestions. However, we do have some "criteria" if you will.

  1. You must know she's a girl upon hearing her name. Thus, no androgynous names.
  2. It needs to sound good when spoken with a southern twang.
  3. No weird spellings. We don't want her to always have to tell people how to say/spell her name in school.
  4. It should have a good nickname, however, we don't want to name her and then never call her by her real name. Too many of our friends say, "Why didn't my parents just name me _____ if they wanted to call me that?"
  5. The initials should not make anything weird. _ _ L
  6. The first name will be the name she is called. No going by the middle name.
  7. It should be unique, but not too unique.
Okay, now that you know the rules, have fun and suggest some good ones. The winner gets to change her diaper.

LOL!!!

Sounds like you're getting desperate. I hate to say, but I've given up on bringing in suggestions.

SO. My idea is for y'all to throw your top 6 names (or first/middle combos) in a hat, and draw one.

Yeah. That should take care of that.

OR you could just wait 'til she's 8 days old. Like they did in the bible. Maybe by then her personality would've helped.

Wait.

I had an idea...

I think we should return to the "Jali" concept. Weren't we there once?

Jali = Jay-lee, right?

But, here's the fun part. Some people might pronounce it like "jolly"....

Then Justin could pronounce it like them and sing: Have a Holly, Jali Christmas.

Eh?
I think I like that one!

Too much pressure! We're having a hard enough time with our own daughter's name. What about what you did with your dog's name? Anyone on ER these days that you like? Abby? She's the only other name I remember from the show.

What an excellent set of rules! The only rule I've added to it for us this time is that it has to sound okay with "Gabby" or "Gabrielle." Sibling names much match in tone, right? You can't have a "Gabrielle" and a "Fred."

I still like Lynn Jr. :)

What about Jezebel. History is dotted with wonderful little girls named Jezebel.

my friend's parents named her Charlotte because it has a lot of nicknames, it tends to get spelled wrong a lot, but she recently realized taht she can tell who truly loves her if they've taken the time to remember how to spell it.

Charlotte jane.

plus it's really dramatic when her mom yells at her.
